Description: |
In 1956 Ghana welcomed African American jazz icon Louis Armstrong as the country prepared to commemorate independence from British colonial rule. In my presentation I examine Armstrong’s rendition of the song “Black and Blue” in Ghana as a distinctive performance of transnational blackness in which he used his peculiar style of creative expression to navigate between political and professional pressures on him in America and an opportunity to meaningfully celebrate black sovereignty in Africa. |
