Fred Rogers, writer, producer, and actor for the infamous public television show Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, believed that the kindness and support of 'just one person' could help a child to reach their full potential. As advisors, most of us entered this helping profession with exactly that in mind-the hope that we can cheerlead alongside our students to help them to build the pathways and successes to support their greatest goals. In this episode, listeners will 'ride along through the neighborhood' and learn about Fred Rogers' theory of personal development and its applications to academic advising. We will examine the 'just one person' model and its potential influences for specialized and underrecognized populations of students, including refugee students. Second, we will apply Mr. Roger's four 'simple interactions approach,' which includes the basic interaction strategies of creating connection, inclusion, reciprocity, and opportunity for growth.
