Description: |
“Addressing the Hidden Curriculum” unveils the hidden curriculum by presenting examples of the unspoken expectations, values, norms, and knowledge that prevent students from thriving throughout their university education and beyond. We will discuss how certain student populations, such as first-generation, URM (under-represented minority), and non-traditional students are disproportionately affected by this hidden knowledge, impacting success and persistence. We will suggest methods for addressing these barriers with students, even in the face of an ever-changing cultural landscape, and will utilize group reflection and discussion to encourage creative thinking to generate new solutions. Attendees will leave the session with a fuller understanding of how to address the hidden curriculum in their own advising practices and will be provided with an interactive informational handout to reference beyond the webinar. |
