The Aggie Lyceum is hosting a July 2, 1776 Civic Conversation to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Independence. July 2nd was the date that the Continental Congress debated Richard Henry Lee's resolution for independence. We plan to recreate that discussion, tricorn hats and all!
Civic Conversations: Structured conversations using the National Issues Forum Institute guidebooks. These events allow students to engage in dialogue and deliberation around difficult issues/problems in structured, facilitated small group discussions. Trained student facilitators lead other students through the issue guide, ensuring that everyone gets the opportunity to consider the issues.
1776: What Should We Do?
It is easy to see history as a series of events, each one simply unfolding after the other. But in fact, the past is filled with key points at which different decisions might have changed the course of history. Before it was history, it was a choice. Imagine that you are a citizen in one of the 13 colonies in the spring of 1776. Tensions across America, especially in New England are at their height. What should we do about our relationship with England?
This event is part of the university's Citizens for Good program and its 250th Anniversary programming.
