| Description: |
This workshop prepares instructors whose primary language is not English for conducting effective office hours. Participants will explore undergraduate expectations and examine the core components of productive office hours. Through video analysis and small group discussion, attendees will learn best practices and common pitfalls in student consultations. The workshop emphasizes professional communication strategies, especially when addressing frustrated students. Additionally, the workshop will cover appropriate resources for student referrals, equipping TAs for successful and supportive office hour sessions. This is the first of two workshops in this series.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to...
1. Conduct effective office hours that meet undergraduate expectations and address a variety of student concerns with confidence and professionalism.
2. Structure office hour sessions effectively, incorporating appropriate opening, discussion, and closing strategies to meet the goals of the session.
3. Employ empathetic and active listening and manage challenging interactions with students.
4. Choose appropriate external resources for student referrals. |
