Description:
This workshop will be a zoom only event. Emotions are fundamental to human existence, and we would be remiss (and downright incorrect) to deny their influence on our thoughts and behaviors. Why, then, is the discussion of emotions so conspicuously absent from higher education and faculty educational development? This session proposes that the way to encourage the development of a supportive classroom space is through a focus on emotions, resulting in authenticity, transparency, and a sense of belonging. It highlights foundational theories of emotion, pushes back against the notion of the classroom as a "neutral" space, and discusses the intersection of emotions—positive and negative—with student success.
Learning Outcomes:
Recognize foundational theories of emotion, as well as how emotion is deeply embedded in everything we do.
Describe the impact and importance of emotions in the classroom, as well as how they relate to student success. |
