Description: In 2023 the First Year Advising Center and Career and Life Design at Oakland University were tasked with coming up with a strategy to better support and retain our Undecided (Exploring) student population. Our division leadership created an initiative to develop better lines of communication between departments and to model effective collaboration in a common goal of retaining and supporting this unique student population. Early on our goal was to define the overarching reason we did not retain our Exploring student population at the same rate as their peers. In the years following the initial pilot program we developed resources, strengthened campus partnerships, and best practices for academic advisers and career coaches. These resources have evolved over time and we are excited to share what has proven to be most effective. This session will provide a brief overview of how we built the foundation of our program along with highlighting strategies our colleagues across campus can use to help guide students in the decision making process for major selection. You will learn and practice three unique techniques designed to better support and engage Exploring and Redeciding students. Participants Will Be Able To: - Learn how one advising office leveraged campus partnerships to create and maintain institutional buy-in for a new initiative. - Understand how collaboration with the Career and Life Design Center led to a stronger referral process, increased communication and outreach for students, and more congruent one-stop services. - Use research to create advising tools, resources, and new techniques that helped build new adviser training models. - Understand how Advisors approached building new appointment structures and the content in each student appointment. - Understand how to track student progress data and use it effectively. - Understand why changing the culture and stigma of being Undecided (Exploring) matters for this generation of college students. - Practice advising resources, and techniques that have been successful over the past three years via storytelling, dreaming and brainstorming.
