| Description: |
Academic advising professionals are often celebrated for their commitment, longevity, and deep institutional knowledge. While some advisors aspire to senior leadership roles, others find fulfillment in remaining “helping professionals” focused on direct student support. When traditional promotional pathways are limited or unavailable, feelings of stagnation and diminished recognition can emerge. This webinar will reframe career advancement by exploring the value of horizontal and lateral career movement as intentional strategies for professional development through the lens of (a) advising administrators, (b) professional advisors, and (c) faculty advisors. Participants will engage in a reflective, practical career-success planning aimed at redefining growth beyond the conventional “climbing the ladder” model. Explore meaningful ways to build a rich, rewarding career that aligns with personal values, institutional needs, and long-term sustainability.
Participants Will Be Able To:
- Understand the complexity of being an advising middle manager.
- Understand the intersection between advising models and institutional management structures.
- Discuss the history and development of mid-career practitioners within academic advising and other niches of higher education.
- Develop strategies to overcome professional challenges.
- Gain insights on sustainable approaches to keep current and future advising practitioners within the field. |
