| Description: |
Higher education practitioners have historically promoted student-centered philosophies and practices. While well-intentioned, focusing solely on student needs does not account for the professionals who are both responsible for and invested in student learning. We intentionally shifted our focus to be advisor-centered: when advisors are respected and valued within a community of care, they will experience a sense of belonging and be deeply engaged in their profession. This culture mitigates burnout and enhances recruitment, resilience, and retention. Valuing advisor development and well-being benefits both the advising community and students.
Cultural change requires ongoing systemic and structural transformation, self-reflection, compassion, and intentional leadership. This presentation explores the benefits of an advisor-centered approach and offers strategies for embedding it into practice. Participants will gain actionable insights to create a sustainable, engaged, and impactful advising community within their organizations.
Participants Will Be Able To:
- Appreciate the importance of a work culture.
- Learn why a culture of support is critical.
- Understand the many ways in which culture can be fostered, and that it is difficult, takes time, and is ultimately extraordinarily rewarding.
- Reflect upon the kind of a work culture participants might want to foster in their own work environments, given the personalities of the leadership and staff. |
