| Description: |
As advisors, students frequently reveal the traumatic events of their lives to us. Without professional licensure in mental health services, what should advisors do? For students to access resources that will address their mental health needs, they first need to reveal to a trusted person that they need help. For this reason, it is incredibly important for advisors to know how to use trauma-informed practices to create a safe space for all students to ask for help.
At the basis of trauma-informed advising is intentionally enacting the 5 principles of trauma-informed care in our advising practice, including safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment” “Harris & Fallot, 2001”. All of these principles are relational skills at their core, highlighting the importance of relational advising strategies when working with students who have experienced trauma. While the practice of trauma-informed advising is primarily relational, it is often difficult to know how to practically enact trauma-informed conversational strategies with students during high-stress advising moments.
This session is ideal for advisors who desire to deepen their understanding of trauma and its impact on students, while learning powerful conversational techniques to better empathize with students in distress.
Participants Will Be Able To:
- Identify what trauma is, how it impacts our stress-response system, and signs of a student in distress.
- Use conversational techniques such as validation, scaling questions, externalization, and parts language to empathize with students while also maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Enact practical strategies for taking a trauma-informed and person-centered approach in our work as advisors.
- Make effective referrals to mental health services. |
