Large advising caseloads are an increasing reality across higher education, often creating tension between operational demands and advisor well-being. As practitioner literature and national conversations continue to highlight the connection between high-volume caseloads and advisor burnout, institutions are seeking structured and sustainable solutions. This webinar explores how advising units can intentionally align operational efficiency with practices that protect advisor capacity while maintaining high-quality student support.
Drawing on experiences within an advising center serving undergraduate business students at a large public institution, presenters will outline scalable strategies that promote clarity, consistency, and shared responsibility. Participants will examine structured appointment models, including required versus optional advising touchpoints, as well as tiered advising approaches such as individual, group, and walk-in formats. Presenters will also share cross-team support systems designed to address uneven caseload distribution. In addition, the session will explore advising delivery formats that support accessibility and efficiency, with examples drawn from our in-person and email advising models.
The webinar will further highlight the role of standardized documentation practices, centralized resource hubs, and clearly defined advising boundaries in reducing redundancy and preventing burnout. Emphasis will be placed on practical frameworks that can be adapted to institutions of varying sizes and resources levels.
Participants will leave with actionable strategies for designing advising systems that balance efficiency with advisor well-being in large caseload environments.
