Description: This session will explore, unpack, and deconstruct burnout through perspectives and experiences of advisors from various geographic and institutional settings. Advising work may be close to our hearts, but there’s a limit to how much space and energy one can give when passion, a student focus, and self-care are inadequate to prevent burnout. Framed by the 12 stages of burnout and the concept of emotional labor, panelists will examine how higher education fosters certain types of burnout that impact advisors and the profession. Participants will be encouraged to consider their spheres of influence as advisors, managers, and colleagues as we seek to interrupt, intervene, and reframe burnout to address its root causes and learn how the profession can support advisors in this era of change. Participants will be able to: - Identify the symptoms and stages of burnout. - Recognize the impact of burnout on advisors and the profession. - Examine ways of preventing or minimizing burnout rather than relying on self-care. - Understand how to create strategies to help prevent burnout.
