| Description: |
This webinar builds upon and deepens prior presentations on the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic advising. While previous sessions explored practical applications of AI to support students this updated presentation introduces Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and how it ties to effective AI usage which equips advisors to make intentional, research-informed decisions about when, how, and with whom to deploy AI tools in their advising practice.
Participants will examine the paradox at the heart of AI-assisted advising: that tools designed to reduce cognitive burden can, if applied without intention, undermine the very learning and metacognitive development that advising is meant to support. By the end of this session, advisors will leave with a practical framework for integrating AI in ways that amplify student capacity rather than substitute for it.
Participants Will Be Able To:
- Identify specific advising scenarios in which AI use reduces extraneous cognitive load and enhances advising efficiency without compromising student learning or engagement.
- Define and apply the three components of Cognitive Load Theory (intrinsic, extraneous, and germane load) to academic advising contexts involving AI tools.
- Recognize the risks of over-reliance on AI in advising interactions, including cognitive atrophy and diminished student critical thinking.
- Evaluate AI-assisted advising practices using a decision-making framework that weighs task complexity, student readiness, and cognitive and relational goals.
- Apply practical AI integration strategies to core advising functions including degree planning, resource referral, communication support, goal-setting, and problem-solving. |
