Description: Literature indicates faculty often are not trained for their crucial role of mentoring. At this session you will gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed for this important role. Using competencies developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER), this particular session will focus on the “promoting professional development” competency. Other Faculty Mentoring Academy competency-focused sessions will be offered throughout this summer. Learning Objectives Mentors will have the knowledge and skills to: Identify the roles mentors play in the overall professional development of their mentees Develop a strategy for guiding professional development using a written document Initiate and sustain periodic conversations with mentees on professional goals and career development objectives and strategies Engage in open dialogue on balancing the competing demands, needs, and interests of mentors and mentees, e.g., research productivity,
