Description: |
In 1989, Nancy Schlossberg theorized that all students need to feel they matter and that they belong. She posited that, if students felt they mattered to the university or to someone at the university, they would become more involved, work to achieve their goals, and be retained at higher rates. As advisors, we play a crucial part in making sure our students feel they matter. Considering the impact of virtual advising, issues of social justice, inclusion, and equity, and the increased concerns regarding students’ mental health, we need to ensure that our approach to advising makes students feel valued and provides a sense of belonging. This workshop will explore the small and large ways we can accomplish this in our daily work, the challenges and limitations of this theory, and provide opportunities for participants to share and engage with one another around the topic. This is part of the OSS Student Development Theories & Advising Approaches Workshop Series. |
