Description: |
As part of the OSS Student Development Theories & Advising Approaches Workshop Series, in this workshop, you will learn about Tinto’s Model on Student Retention (1975) and Astin’s Theory of Student Involvement (1984). Tinto (1975) claims that academic and social integration are determining factors of graduation and retention rates. Similarly, Astin (1984) claims that a student’s level of involvement directly affects learning outcomes. I will provide an overview of these theories and related literature, as well as how these models relate to academic advising. We will explore a case study of transfer students and learn how they experienced integration and engagement throughout their first semester at Texas A&M University.
All academic advisors and student service professionals who work directly with students are encouraged to sign up.
