Today, liberal education is considered as a system that promotes values such as creative, imaginative, and critical thinking in order to cultivate “free” human beings, who are able to demonstrate independence in their intellectual development as well as an appreciation for the values of diversity in learning. Yet, in some disciplinary engagements within the academy, the ethos of liberal education has been tainted by the hegemonic allusions to ideological constructions within dominant culture as a heuristic tool for shaping how we think about the world. This is what generates the problematic that is grappled with in this presentation—the erasure of Blackness from the discourse of knowledge. In an attempt to grapple with this problematic, two important questions are raised in this presentation: (1) why does this problem persist in an age of liberation education? (2) what should be the task of the Black scholar in an era where the goals of diversity, equity and social justice are overemph |
