Description: Does assigning writing make you feel like Sisyphus, eternally pushing a rock up a mountain? Just the thought of reading and responding to all those papers—often painfully inadequate at best—can be enough to make you avoid assigning writing altogether. However, a clear and carefully planned assignment can lighten the burden. This workshop, presented by the University Writing Center, will help you consider your course’s learning objectives, your own grading load, and your students’ engagement to create a practical and instructive writing assignment, one that can help students meet your expectations and allow you to assess the results more easily. Presenters Thad Bowerman and Dr. Valerie Balester will discuss assignment design and delivery, as well as outside resources for students, and they’ll close the loop with some practice in responding to student writing.
