Description: |
During the March 2019 First Friday Lecture, Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman considers the power of the “Internet of things” and that of respectability policing. Her concern is the role of digital technologies in social stratification and neighborhood management. She begins by examining the use of ShotSpotter technology that provides audio detection of gunfire and how it was used to investigate the murder of Janese Talton Jackson. She discusses how the discourse surrounding the murder of Jackson changed from “just another” Black killing to a trending story.
Dr. Means Coleman is Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity. She is also a Professor in the Department of Communication and has an affiliation with Africana Studies. Her research focuses on Blacks in media, and she is currently writing her sixth book, which examines the NAACP and its media activism. Last month her documentary, Horror Noire, had its international premiere. |
