The University Libraries and the Center for Teaching Excellence invite all faculty and staff for an interactive working lunch session on understanding fair use, an important doctrine within copyright law. Fair use, and its flexibility, can help you choose content for your course, decide what picture to use in your book, or what table to use in your conference presentation. Workshop participants will learn fair use basics, including the four factors noted in the United States Code, Title 17, ยง 107. Participants will be introduced to the Fair Use Checklist tool, when faced with using text, images, or songs made by someone other than yourself. Lastly, the workshop will cover the meaning and value of a transformative use. By the end of the session, participants will have a better understanding about how fair use can positively influence their teaching, course design, and research. Boxed lunch is provided.
