Second in a three-part series: In the first of this series of 'Rational Learning' seminars, I introduced the thesis that the quality of one's life, with respect to both self and others, is optimized by mindfully choosing actions that are motivated by love, or the desire for and willingness to contribute to good things, for oneself and for all. In this second seminar, we will discuss pressing societal issues such as racism, xenophobia, religious intolerance and sexism, arguing that each can be explained in terms of irrational and indefensible beliefs that pit 'us' vs. 'them'. We will then discuss specific actions that a group of individuals on the A&M campus could employ to safely, responsibly, and lovingly impact these issues on our campus and in our local community. Attendees will be invited to collaborate on the design and implementation of one such action to be enacted in the spring semester. The intended audience is students, both undergraduate- and graduate-level. |
