Description: |
Dr. Roberts' will share how formerly enslaved Texans founded more than 550 “Freedom Colonies” or historic black settlements across Texas. Since then, a variety of factors facilitated freedom colony descendants’ dispersal and settlement decline. However, in Shankleville, Texas, descendants sustained their attachments to and nurtured their communities through annual celebrations and oral traditions. Dr. Roberts will discuss oral traditions and their functionality within Shankleville and other freedom colonies. |
