Description: |
This is a brown bag - bring your own lunch event. English is the common language in many academic conversations around the world, and yet English is not one monolithic dialect. Many varieties exist, and there are more non-native speakers using English than native speakers. Both native and non-native speakers of English can make modifications to their speech to be more comprehensible to their audience, and both can enhance their listening comprehension of accented English. This workshop will demonstrate techniques from the fields of applied linguistics and intercultural communication that can help both speakers and listeners overcome communication barriers. Attendees will learn about features of speech – usually unconscious to speakers and listeners – that affect comprehensibility, and will leave with evidence-based strategies for speaking more comprehensibly and for comprehending others better. |
